HERE’S YOUR HAVE-FUN HOLIDAY CALENDAR

We know the holidays can be crazy busy. To be sure you don’t miss any of the best celebrations our area has to offer, we polled the A/B team for what activities we're most looking forward to and gathered them here. Peruse and enjoy at your leisure!

Parties & Parades

Ok, we’re biased, but we recommend kicking things off at our own grand opening festivities this Wednesday, December 5th (find all the details here). On Saturday, December 8th, enjoy the annual Chapel Hill-Carrboro Holiday Parade as it makes its way from the Morehead Planetarium down Franklin Street to Carrboro Town Hall. Set your alarms as the merriment starts early at 10 a.m. Then the following week, be sure to don your most festive (and questionable) duds at Southern Peak Brewery’s 3rd annual Tacky Sweater Party on Saturday, December 15th. From 6-10:30 p.m. there will be live music from Maverick Rose, grub for purchase from Chirba Chirba Dumplin and prizes (of course!) for the ugliest sweater of the season.

Lights & Lanterns

We’ve got two recommendations for light-peeping all month long. First, check out the 20th Anniversary Season of Lake Myra Christmas Lights in Wendell. The hour-long spectacular features almost a quarter-of-a-million lights that dance synchronized to holiday music. Park on site or bring a lawn chair to enjoy the show—it's free! Plus, on Saturday nights, even Santa is known to make an appearance. The show will be lit now through New Year’s Eve; visit here for full details.

The other attraction we recommend checking out is the NC Chinese Lantern Festival at Booth Amphitheater. Artfully designed lanterns create a new skyline of color and light in Cary. Guests wind their way on foot through the festival; plus, there are holiday treats on hand and cultural performances each night. Lights are on now through January 13th. For opening times, ticket prices and more info, visit here.

Shopping & Strolling

In Chapel Hill, any Saturday in December will be the best day to stroll downtown, as all on- and off-street parking is FREE. On Sundays (December 9th and December 16th), check out the The Carolina Inn Holiday Market at UNC—in addition to local vendors, there will be food, drink and s’mores by the fire.

And on Friday, December 14th, don’t miss the wonderful Holiday ArtWalk down Franklin Street. Stop by 140 West Plaza for caroling and a beverage or two before wandering down the lantern-lit lane for festive displays, shopping and more.

Volunteering

Looking for ways to support the community this holiday season? Check out Downtown Chapel Hill for links to great organizations looking for help or donations in the weeks ahead. You could gift a holiday meal to a family in need, provide a toy for a child’s celebration or volunteer talents at a number of events this month. No matter how you choose to share, your contribution will be appreciated.

On behalf of the entire A/B team, happy holidays to you and yours. We’re so grateful to have you as part of our community. Cheers!
